早在一戰，為對付敵方的空中偵察，每一方都采用各種方式盡量遮蔽己方的大炮，有的用大面積的防水油布，也有用漁網，亞在網上增加一些布條，這就是偽裝網的雛形。

As early as World War I, in order to deal with enemy aerial reconnaissance, each side used various methods to cover their own cannons as much as possible. 到了二戰，航空照相8成為偵察的重要手段，制式偽裝網得到進一步發展，除了大型武器裝備，在重要軍事設施的偽裝也被廣泛應用。不過，那時的偽裝網僅能對抗可見光偵察，所用材料基本上以棉麻為主。

20世紀60年代以后，隨著偵察器材和精密制導武器的不斷應用，大大提高了揭露偽裝、識別目標和武器命中目標的能力。也促進了制式偽裝網的發展。其基礎材料、偽裝遮蔽性能，以及偽裝機能能總都發生了變化。
